Imagine this: you’ve just baked a big batch of delicious cookies with your family. The whole kitchen smells amazing! But the cookies are supposed to be for dessert later, so your mom tells you to wait.
But they look so good. You think, “Just one tiny bite won’t hurt, right?” You sneak one cookie, nibble it down quickly, and brush off the crumbs. Later, when your mom sees the missing cookie, she asks, “Did you eat one of the cookies?”
You have two choices: tell the truth or make up a story.
If you tell the truth, you might get in trouble, but at least your mom can trust that you’re being honest. If you lie, it might seem easier for a moment, but it can leave you feeling yucky inside, like too many cookie crumbs in your bed! And when we lie, we often have to tell more lies to cover it up — it’s a bit like eating too many cookies; at first, it feels exciting, but later, it can make you feel sick.
Lies are a lot like cookies: one lie can lead to another, just like it’s hard to stop at one cookie! But every time we choose the truth, it’s like choosing something good and healthy for our hearts. In the Bible, God teaches us to be honest because He knows it helps us build trust and keeps our hearts clear and free from guilt. Jesus, who always told the truth, wants us to follow His example so we can live with love and kindness.
Is there a time you’ve told a little fib and then felt bad about it? How did it feel when you told the truth?
