For God So Loved the Lost: Understanding Our Mission to Share Christ

In a world filled with programs and presentations, it's easy to think that sharing our faith requires eloquent speeches or perfect apologetic arguments. But what if the most powerful evangelism begins not with what we say, but with how we live? The story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8 reveals a profound truth about loving the lost that challenges our assumptions about evangelism.

Who Are the Lost?

Before we can love the lost, we must understand who they are. The lost are simply those who have yet to come into a relationship with Jesus Christ - people who are far from God and do not name Christ as their Lord and Savior. They're not a distant group of people we need special programs to reach; they're our family members, coworkers, neighbors, and friends.

The question we must ask ourselves is direct: Do you love the lost? This isn't about a TV series or abstract concept - it's about real people in our lives who desperately need the hope that only Jesus can provide.

What Does Research Tell Us About Conversion?

Studies on conversion reveal something surprising about how people come to faith. Research from the book "I Once Was Lost" identified five barriers in the conversion process, but the first and most crucial barrier had nothing to do with arguments or presentations.

The first barrier people must cross is moving from distrust to trust. Once a person began to trust a Christian, they had crossed the first barrier toward faith. This wasn't based on compelling arguments or eloquent explanations - it was based on relationship and trust.

This raises a sobering question: Is my life a witness to the love of Christ? If you were the only Christian someone knew, would they be able to see not only the evidence of Christ but the love of Christ in your life?

How Does Evangelism Really Begin?

Philip's encounter with the Ethiopian eunuch shows us that evangelism begins with a relationship - but not the relationship we might expect. It begins with Philip's relationship with God.

When an angel told Philip, "Go south to the road—the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza" (Acts 8:26), Philip faced a significant challenge. This wasn't a quick trip - it was a multi-day journey of about 34 miles through dangerous desert terrain. Yet Philip obeyed without knowing the full plan.

Loving the Lost Begins with Loving God

Here's the foundational truth: loving the lost begins with loving God. Without a love for God, we would never have a genuine love for the lost. To understand God's heart for the lost, we must understand God's very nature - "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son" (John 3:16).

Research on effective evangelistic churches confirms this. Churches that successfully reach lost people share one common characteristic: a vivid relationship with God lies at the heart of real evangelism. People in these churches can tell you what difference being a Christian makes in their own lives.

What Is the Real Evangelistic Strategy?

Philip's approach reveals the true evangelistic strategy, and it might surprise you. He didn't begin with a presentation or program - he began by listening.

Listen to God First

Philip listened to God's direction and obeyed. This is why our relationship with God is crucial - we cannot listen to God if we're not spending time with Him. We cannot hear God's voice if we're not seeking to love Him.

Listen to People Second

When Philip reached the Ethiopian eunuch, he heard the man reading from Isaiah. Philip asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?" (Acts 8:30). The eunuch replied, "How can I, unless someone explains it to me?" (Acts 8:31).

Notice the progression: Listen to God, obey, then listen to the person. Philip was invited into the chariot because trust had been established. The evangelistic strategy is simple: listen and obey, then listen again.

Why Does Trust Matter More Than Arguments?

A powerful example comes from a recent college retreat where a self-described atheist student said to the group, "You guys are making me consider this whole Jesus thing." Notice the phrase "you guys" - it wasn't the message alone that was compelling, but the relationships and trust built over time.

Trust takes time and relational investment. While dramatic conversions can happen, evangelism typically occurs in the course of everyday life with people we already know - in our family circles, friend circles, work circles, and neighborhood circles.

How Can You Start Loving the Lost Today?

Think about one person in your life - it breaks your heart to imagine them spending eternity apart from God. You might be the one person in their life whom God is calling to share Jesus with them, not through a program or presentation, but through the way you live your life.

The Three P's of Preparation

Preach the Gospel to Yourself Daily: Start each day remembering that because of Jesus, you're fully accepted by the Father. If we don't preach the gospel to ourselves, we'll believe the enemy's lies that we're not enough.

Pray for Opportunities: Ask God to give you opportunities for conversations. These are bold prayers, but God puts these conversations in our path every day. The question isn't whether they exist - it's whether we're prepared.

Prepare: Be ready for the opportunities God provides. Remember Jesus' words: "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few" (Matthew 9:37). There are people in your life that only you can reach.

What Does Jesus Promise Us?

Jesus gave us the mission: "Go and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19). But He didn't leave us to accomplish this alone. The next verse provides the assurance we need: "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).

Jesus has never lied, never gone back on His word, never said something He didn't mean. He's with us. Through the power of God that is in us, we can do so much more than we imagine.

Life Application

This week, identify one person in your life who is far from God - someone whose eternal destiny breaks your heart. Commit to being intentional about showing Christ's love to them through your actions, words, and prayers. Start by praying for opportunities to serve them, encourage them, or simply be present in their life.

Ask yourself these questions:

- If this person were to describe what they see in my life, would they see evidence of Christ's love?
- What specific need does this person have that I could meet this week?
- How can I demonstrate the difference Jesus makes in my life without saying a word?
- Am I prepared to share simply and clearly what Jesus means to me if the opportunity arises?

Remember, evangelism isn't about having all the answers or making perfect presentations. It's about living faithfully for Jesus in sight of others and being prepared to share the hope that is within you. The harvest is plentiful, and God wants to use your life to reach people that only you can reach.
